What is Paleo(~ish)?
The Paleo diet advocates using the diet of our pre-agricultural ancestors and combining that with the best of modern science and life to inform our eating habits. These ancestors were hunter-gatherers who primarily ate animals and non-starchy vegetables, along with some fruit, nuts, and seeds.
Here is a video that does a fantastic job of summarizing the Paleo diet.
So where does Paleo(~ish) come into the picture?
The sad truth is that it is quite difficult to eat totally Paleo on the go because our culture and our chain restaurants simply do not support this way of eating. There are all sorts of additives, preservatives, sweeteners, and fillers added to the majority of readily available foods. Even though you may order that burger without the bun, you can bet it isn’t grass-fed. Unfortunately, eating out at chain restaurants just can’t be avoided sometimes.
In this same vein, while consuming dairy isn’t strict Paleo, it can make eating balanced meals on the go much more convenient, which is why some of the meal suggestions contain cheese or sour cream. They are an easy source of dietary fat to accompany that naked burger. However, not everyone tolerates dairy well. If you don’t eat dairy, please be aware that you will need to order these options without cheese or sour cream. As for butter, unless the restaurant menu specifically states it as an ingredient, I have no way of knowing if each meal option contains any. Be diligent in asking each restaurant to exclude any butter from your meal.
